The Vancouver Soundskate Project Map

ABOUT SOUNDSKATING

The soundskate project is part of work for CMNS 359 - The Culture and Politics of Sound at Simon Fraser University in Canada. What started as an appreciation for the sound of my own skateboarding, amid a background of noise complaints & city bylaws stunting development plans or threatening existing spaces for skating, turned into an exploratory research project.

Please explore the pages under each mapped item! This project uses a narrative documentary structure— which highlights how this understanding of the sounds of Vancouver’s skate culture comes from the perspective of one listener/researcher. Soundmaps and soundscapes are nice, but please take a look at the detailed pages for a more in-depth understanding of skate spaces and subjectivity.
